Studying and Learning in an Independent Study Course

Independent Study Courses are great for some people.....
    ... and not so great for others.

  Independent Study Courses are good for someone who:
     * Just can't get to campus on a regular schedule (or at all)
     * Can set one's own goals
     * Knows how to acheive her/his goals in a timely manner
     * Needs to complete a course soon
     * Is a good reader

  Independent Study Courses might not be so good for someone who:
      * Needs a lot of interaction with teachers and fellow students
      * Is very shy about asking for clarification
      * Needs regular, strict deadlines in order to achieve goals

How does one "Manage" an Independent Study Course?

  * Set aside time to work on the course every week, and DO IT
  * Get started right away
  * Set regular, short-term goals
  * Reward yourself when you achieve each goal
  * If you fall behind, focus on ONLY the NEXT assignment
     and do it TODAY

How does the "online" or "Distance Learning" format help
Independent Study Students?

  * The immediate feedback provided in THIS course helps
      it flow smoothly and keeps you on track
  * Many assignments are small ones, allowing you to achieve
     a goal in a reasonable amount of time (part of a day)
  * With the textboook + online resources, there is some
     format that appeals to most learning styles
